EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) in Skincare: Benefits, How It Works & Best Products

Everyone is talking about peptides right now, and for good reason. But if you’ve been sleeping on growth factors, it’s time to wake up. EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) is one of the most powerful and well-researched actives in skincare, and it deserves a spotlight of its own.

What Are Growth Factors in Skincare?

Growth factors are similar to peptides in that both are chains of amino acids — but growth factors are significantly longer, placing them firmly in the protein category. Think of them as souped-up peptides.

While peptides can signal skin cells to perform specific tasks (produce collagen, reduce muscle movement, boost hyaluronic acid), growth factors take things further. They can stimulate cell growth, proliferation, healing, and differentiation. Among the several growth factors used in skincare, EGF is the most studied and most widely used.

What Is EGF?

EGF stands for Epidermal Growth Factor — also known by its INCI name, Sh-Oligopeptide-1. It was discovered by American biochemist Stanley Cohen, whose groundbreaking work earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1986.

Its primary function? Stimulating the proliferation of epidermal cells. In cosmetic skincare, EGF has a well-established track record in wound healing and skin renewal, backed by decades of scientific research.

How Does EGF Work on Skin?

When applied topically, EGF works through a precise molecular cascade:

  1. The EGF molecule binds to Epidermal Growth Factor Receptors (EGFRs) on the surface of skin cells.
  2. This binding causes two receptor molecules to link up (dimerize), activating an enzyme.
  3. The activated enzyme initiates signaling pathways that travel to the cell nucleus.
  4. The nucleus responds by stimulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival.

The result is a comprehensive skin renewal response at the cellular level.

EGF Benefits for Skin

Thanks to this signaling cascade, regular use of EGF in skincare can deliver:

  • Boosted collagen and elastin production for firmer, more resilient skin
  • Increased hyaluronic acid synthesis for improved hydration
  • Accelerated skin repair and wound healing
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improved skin texture and tone

Is EGF Safe?

EGF has been extensively studied and is considered safe for topical use. It is a naturally occurring protein in the body, and when applied to the skin, it works with existing cellular receptors rather than disrupting skin function. It is generally well-tolerated across skin types, including sensitive skin.

As with any active ingredient, if you have specific health concerns or are undergoing medical treatment, consult your dermatologist before introducing EGF into your routine.

Who Should Use EGF?

EGF is particularly beneficial for:

  • Aging or mature skin looking to boost collagen and reduce fine lines
  • Skin in recovery — post-procedure, post-sun damage, or healing from blemishes
  • Dull or uneven skin tone that needs cellular renewal
  • Anyone seeking preventative anti-aging benefits from their late 20s onward

Introducing BIOEFFECT: Science-Led EGF Skincare from Iceland

If you’re ready to add EGF to your routine, the brand to know is Bioeffect

Founded by three Icelandic scientists, Bioeffec twas born from a genuinely remarkable discovery: a method to bioengineer barley plants to produce growth factors essential for healthy skin. This plant-derived approach to EGF production is both innovative and exceptionally pure.

The barley used to produce Bioeffect’s growth factors is cultivated in a state-of-the-art greenhouse located within the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark in Iceland. The operation is powered by sustainable geothermal energy, with plants grown in volcanic pumice and nourished by filtered Icelandic groundwater.

Even the water in the products is geologically filtered through layers of volcanic lava for maximum purity.

The result is a skincare line that is as clean and sustainable as it is effective.

Which BIOEFFECT Product Is Right for You?

We kept our curation intentional so here are our favorites and why:

First, we have the classic, signature EGF Serum. This serum has a lightweight, watery texture and the star ingredient is the solo growth factor, EGF. With only seven ingredients total, it also contains hyaluronic acid and glycerin for maximum skin hydration. This is best for the under 35 set, for daily maintenance and prevention of visible signs of aging.

Next up is the EGF Power Serum. Same lightweight texture and daily use, in a chic chrome glass vial. This is for my over 35’s, as it boasts TWO growth factors – we have a higher concentration of EGF, as well as KGF (Keratinocyte Growth Factor, great for barrier repair and redness reduction). Clocking in at 12 ingredients, it also contains hyaluronic acid and NAG, a hydrating amino acid sugar that can help reduce UV-induced discoloration.

Last (for the serums), we have the 30 Day Power Treatment. As you can guess, this is an intensive 30-day treatment that can be used 1-4x/year to intensify your results. I love this one as a way to jumpstart your EGF journey, or to use prior to a big event. I used this before my wedding a few years ago and loved it. The serum comes in three small chrome glass vials, which also makes it very easy for travel. This is the most potent option and the formula contains EGF, KGF and IL-1a (Interleukin 1 Alpha, a cytokine that mediates inflammation and strengthens barrier function).

With any of these serums, you can enhance their effects by topping them with the Imprinting Hydrogel Mask. This is a clear, two piece hydrogel mask that is fully biodegradable and water soluble. It contains glycerin and hyaluronic acid, so on it’s own it’s a lovely hydrating sheet mask, but put it on over your BIOEFFECT serums and kapow!! It was designed to create a microenvironment to aid in the penetration of these serums. Use 2-3x week for maximum results.

Finally, we have two products for two of our our most underappreciated and overlooked body parts – hands and lips. The EGF Hand Serum is a gel serum containing (duh) EGF, Ceramide, Niacinamide, and Hyaluronic Acid. It absorbs quickly and provides deep hydration, helps protect the skin barrier, and diminishes the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

The BIOEFFECT Lip Balm is a chic pale green bullet in a chrome tube – it has the most satisfying magnetic click! Formulated with jojoba and avocado oil, sunflower seed wax, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E, it is smooth and nourishing and perfect for conditioned and non-glossy lips. If I wore lipstick, this would be my base.
